Wayne Lord and Michael Stimpert of Gold Kist, Inc., hosted a CEO Roundtable luncheon on March 20, 2006 featuring Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, a 12 year veteran of the Georgia House of Representatives and a Member of the Georgia Congressional Delegation since January 2005. The freshman congressman actively supports the improvement of transportation infrastructure and views it as a high priority nationally. Among his committee appointments, he serves on the Transportation Committee of the House and offered a perspective on transportation discussions currently underway in congress. He worked on HR3, a $400,000,000 transportation bill that contains 21 bus projects and language that includes Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) language. Additionally he worked to include $1 million for design of the I-75-/ I-285 Transit Corridor Project to ensure that it moves ahead. This project contains plans for a BRT which will link two major markets, Cumberland in Cobb County and the Perimeter business district portions of DeKalb and the City of Sandy Springs, making these two employment and retail centers accessible for commuters, visitors and shoppers. The project is critical to Perimeter's overall goal of access, mobility and transportation choices for the traveling public into and out of the Perimeter business district.
Mr. Westmoreland congratulated the Perimeter CIDs President and Boards of Directors on developing strong partnerships and cross jurisdictional leadership that encourages jobs, economic growth and creates a critical engine that drives the economic strength of the state and the southeast. He cited PCIDs as a model for the nation in private/public initiatives. He congratulated PCIDs on its hard work resulting in the designation as a Best Workplaces for Commuters District, the largest in the country. This designation by the US EPA recognizes communities that meet best practices by encouraging alternative transportation choices to commuters and that enhance pedestrian amenities. The Perimeter Transportation Coalition (PTC) partners with the PCIDs to work aggressively to encourage such alternatives as vanpools, car pools, use of the rapid transit system (MARTA) and shuttle services.
